Who we are

Alan Honick

Alan has been part of Prosocial’s development team since its inception in 2013, and is also a documentary filmmaker. His environmental documentaries have won awards for journalism, photography, and editing. They have been broadcast on PBS stations nationwide, and educational versions have been distributed to schools internationally. His most recent documentary, Seeing the Forest, illustrates how Elinor Ostrom’s core design principles can evolve naturally in groups.

In addition to making films about Prosocial and its use in a variety of sectors, he is also developing initiatives to implement Prosocial within the environmental community, with a special focus on Regenerative Agriculture.

David S. Wilson

David is president of the Evolution Institute and SUNY Distinguished Professor of Biology and Anthropology of Binghamton University, part of the State University of New York. He has made foundational contributions to evolutionary theory and to the study of evolution in relation to human affairs.

He is widely credited for reviving and developing the theory of multi-level selection, which provides a framework for studying the evolution of prosociality in all species. His collaboration with Elinor Ostrom provides part of the theoretical foundation for the Prosocial project. In addition to his role as lead developer of Prosocial, David enjoys serving as facilitator for groups as diverse as schools, businesses, and environmental organizations.

Ian F. MacDonald

Ian is currently overseeing Prosocial data collection efforts and developing his practice as a cultural design consultant. His background straddles the realms of evolutionary psychology and cultural evolutionary science, and he received his PhD in Ecology, Evolution & Behavior from Binghamton University in 2018. Ian’s taught a range of undergraduate evolutionary science courses and studied social behaviour in a variety of species, from song birds to feral goats to humans. As an avid gardener and licensed small greenhouse grower, when not Prosocial’ising Ian can be found outside and/or reading books on Permaculture.

Lori Wiser

Lori is an accomplished senior marketing executive whose career spans positions in Public Relations, Account Services, Consumer Insights, and Strategy for global brands. A Board Member of the Evolution Institute with a background in anthropology and evolutionary psychology, Lori co-founded Wiser Insights Group to deliver behaviorally-driven analytic models to be used for strategic decision making in all types of organizations.

Ethnography is the nucleus of her work decoding the conditional nature of our actions, and she passionately seeks to educate people about the role of evolution and adaptation in unconsciously influencing, and often driving, human behavior.

A self-proclaimed Social Justice Warrior, Lori focuses on what she calls the “chronically marginalized” in our society and believes that rethinking our social and cultural institutions can have profound implications and decrease human suffering on a global scale.

Lori is an avid reader, cyclist, and prohibition-era cocktail enthusiast. Whatever she is doing, Stan Lee, her precocious cat, is often nearby.

Paul Atkins

Paul Atkins, Ph.D. is project coordinator and lead facilitator trainer for Prosocial. He lives in Australia where he is a facilitator, trainer, executive coach and researcher. He is director of the training arm of Prosocial.World - the Prosocial Institute. Paul is a Visiting Associate Professor at the Crawford School of Public Policy at the Australian National University. His work has featured in many of the world’s leading management and psychology journals as well as in two books: " Mindfulness in Organizations" and " Prosocial: Using Evolutionary Science to Build Productive, Equitable, and Collaborative Groups"   Paul is past President of the Australia and New Zealand Association for Contextual Behavioural Science (ACBS) and a Fellow of the international ACBS. 

Paul's main interest in applying Prosocial is in the context of sustainability and education. He regularly works iwth community groups, schools, universities and  is currently working with a large Catholic K-12 school to implement Prosocial for the teachers and eventually, the students. He is also engaged in a large project exploring how School Principal wellbeing might be improved through methods such as Prosocial.

Steven C. Hayes

Steve is Nevada Foundation Professor in the Department of Psychology at the University of Nevada. His career has focused on an analysis of the nature of human language and cognition and the application of this to the understanding and alleviation of human suffering and the promotion of human growth.

He originated Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), a popular and extensively researched method of psychotherapy that is useful in a wide variety of areas, and Relational Frame Theory, the program of research into human language on which ACT is based. His popular book "Get Out of Your Mind and Into Your Life" was featured in Time Magazine among several other major media outlets and for a time was the best selling self-help book in the United States.

His work has been recognized by several awards including the Impact of Science on Application award from the Society for the Advancement of Behavior Analysis, and the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Association for Behavioral and Cognitive Therapies.

Find a Facilitator

If you are not already skilled at facilitating groups, the best way to adopt Prosocial is to be guided through the process by a trained facilitator. We have facilitators who work in all sectors including corporations, government departments, community groups and others. Some of the members of our community are also open to working for free with groups that have limited resources. You can find a facilitator here.

Can I learn to facilitate Prosocial myself?

Absolutely! We offer online and face-to-face training options for people who aspire to be Prosocial facilitators with their own groups. Training is offered through the Prosocial Institute, the training arm of Prosocial. World. You can find all the details here.

Training courses teach you how to use the ACT matrix for groups to create a sense of shared purpose and to plan how best to implement the Core Design Principles. The courses also show you how to use the practical tools we offer within “The Prosocial Path” to measure change over time and get everybody on the same page to create real and sustained change.

If you are a confident facilitator you may be able to use the book and our tools to try out Prosocial yourself with a group you care about, even without doing our facilitator training courses. However, our experience is that people benefit from the training immensely, plus you get a chance to build a community of practice with other members of the Prosocial community during training.
