N.J. Enfield

Nick Enfield is Professor of Linguistics at the University of Sydney. His research on language, culture, cognition and social life is based on long term field work in mainland Southeast Asia, especially Laos. He received his Honours degree at ANU and his PhD at the University of Melbourne. He was a staff scientist in the Max Planck Society from 2000 to 2014.

His recent books include What is Truth For?, Language vs. Reality, Consequences of Language, and How We Talk. He has published scholarly work in Psychological Review, Trends in Cognitive Sciences, American Anthropologist, Anthropological Theory, PNAS, Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society B, Scientific Reports, Language, Annals of the American Association of Geographers, and more.

Nick has published widely in linguistics, anthropology, and cognitive science venues, and has written for the Guardian, the Times Literary Supplement, the Wall Street Journal, and Science. He is a Fellow of the Academy of the Social Sciences in Australia, the Royal Society of New South Wales, and the Australian Academy of the Humanities.
