Darwin's theory of evolution is 165 years old but the formal study of cultural evolution didn't get started until the 1970's. Peter Richerson was a pioneer, working with his colleague Robert Boyd to lay the foundation in books such as Culture and the Evolutionary Process (1985) and Not By Genes Alone: How Culture Transformed Human Evolution (2006). They also mentored an entire tribe of students with distinguished careers of their own. Pete remains just as active today, helping to create the Cultural Evolution Society, serving as its first president, and co-authoring A Story of Us: A New Look at Human Evolution (2021) with Lesley Newson.
